CORGI
is the National Watchdog for Gas Safety in the United Kingdom.
In
1991 the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) asked CORGI to maintain a register
of competent gas installers in the UK. CORGI became the ‘Council for Registered
Gas Installers’. CORGI’s responsibilities have now extended to include Northern
Ireland and the Isle of Man and they are also working to improve gas safety
in The Channel Isles. Registration is a legal requirement for businesses
and self-employed people working on gas fittings or appliances. There are
many benefits of being CORGI registered. Around 47,000 gas installation businesses
employing approximately 98,000 gas fitting operatives are currently registered.
Anyone
considering purchasing a new gas fire and/or fireplace and having it installed should visit the
CORGI website to obtain the latest information and advice available regarding
gas safety, your responsibilities and the law, and information on finding a
qualified and registered fireplace fitter in your area.
